The Weekend Hunger Gap in Langley – Hunger Lives in Every Neighbourhood
In every Langley school, countless children are facing the harsh reality of hunger. While many rely on school meal programs during the week, weekends bring uncertainty, fear, and empty cupboards. The escalating costs of living have plunged many families into crisis.
For children in food-insecure households, weekends can mean not eating properly, or at all. This consistent hunger can have lifelong repercussions. Children who experience food insecurity are:
Two to four times more likely to suffer from poorer health or chronic conditions.
More prone to behavioral problems, higher levels of anxiety, and depression.
Likely to face developmental impairments in language and motor skills
At greater risk of being overweight due to poor diet and the unpredictability of food availability.

We Partner With Schools
Every Friday, we ensure that hungry students in Langley receive meals and snacks to last the weekend and beyond. Our efforts are coordinated with teachers and administrators who confidentially identify students in need.
We Team Up with Donors and Partners
Our work is powered by the generosity of our community. Every $25 donation provides one child with a bag of food for the weekend. We welcome individuals, companies, and foundations to join our donor community and make a difference.
With the support of our partners and generous donors, the Langley School District Foundation is able to coordinate the delivery of food to nearly 500 students every Friday. This means hundreds of children no longer have to wonder where their next meal is coming from.

BACKPACK BUDDIES
In 2012, mother-daughter duo, Joanne and Emily-anne were confronted with the reality of childhood hunger in their own community. In particular, they learned about the “weekend hunger gap” — when kids who normally rely on school-day meal programs suffer in silence over the weekends when meal support is scarce.
